Description | Climate | Attractions | Recommendations

Vietnam's capital and second largest city retains its French colonial ambiance and is dotted with lakes and lovely parks. West of Hanoi are the Son La mountains, known for their sanctuaries, grottos, and pagodas. The traditional cultures of Vietnam's ethnic minorities still survive in the northern province's mountains, but these regions might be inaccessible because of border disputes between Vietnam and China. If a visit to the northern mountains isn't possible, travellers should be sure to visit the montagnard regions of Central Vietnam.

Vietnam offers a rare opportunity to see a country of traditional charm and beauty taking the first hesitant steps into the modern world. This city is smaller, quieter and is fringed with natural lakes, tree lined boulevards and al fresco cafes. Hanoi city remains quiet enough for cycling which is the most ideal means of getting around, and many hotels and cafes rent bicycles.

Dont's:
Shoes are to be removed when visiting homes or Buddhist Temples. Do not point the bottom of your feet towards other people or Buddhist statues. This is not universal so watch what others are doing.

Shorts are considered inappropriate attire and are allowed to be worn by children. In recent times in the main cities, it has been considered fashionable by women. However, it is still not widely accepted and has not yet filtered to the hinterlands. Again, check what people are wearing around you.

Leaving chopsticks sticking upright (vertically) in a rice bowl is not appreciated as this is a powerful death sign. In doing so this indicates incense sticks which are burned for the dead.

Climate

Vietnam's weather is tropical in the south and monsoonal in the north with a hot, rainy season (mid-May to mid-September) and a warm, dry season (mid-October to mid-March). In Hanoi it is not unusual to require a coat in January.
