Nui Sam (Sam Mountain)
Three miles southwest of Chau Doc is a rocky hill that is literally honeycombed with sanctuaries, tombs, and temples. The majority of visitors come only to see Tay An Pagoda, Lady Chua Xu Temple, and the Tomb of Thoai Ngoc Hau, but if you walk right up to the top of the hill you can get a good view of the surrounding countryside. It is from here that you can appreciate that this is some of the most productive land in Vietnam.
Temple of Lady Chua Xu
The Ba Chua Xu Temple was built in 1820 on Sam Mountain in An Giang province. According to a legend, in the early 1800s villagers found a statue of a lady dating back to the sixth century, in the forest. They built a temple in her honour, hoping that she would bring them better crops and better lives. This is why the marble statue of Ba Chua Xu, meaning 'Country Lady,' is worshipped.
